Dog jumping into water: Heat Wave! Stay Safe and Cool

Please be aware and prepare for this weekend's heatwave. If you are having a medical emergency, call 911.

Here are some tips to stay cool and hydrated on Major Heat Risk Advisory days:

Drink plenty of water: Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration.

Dress appropriately:
Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothing that allows your body to breathe and helps to reflect heat away from your body. Opt for breathable fabrics such as cotton or moisture-wicking materials.

Seek shade or cool spaces:
Stay indoors in air-conditioned environments as much as possible, especially during the hottest parts of the day. If you don't have access to air conditioning, try to spend time in shaded areas or well-ventilated spaces.

Limit outdoor activities:
Minimize strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, typically between 10 am and 4 pm. If you need to be outside, take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas and listen to your body's signals.

Use sunscreen and wear a hat:
Protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays by applying sunscreen with a high SPF before going outside. Wear a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face and neck from direct sunlight.

Stay cool at home:
Use fans, air conditioners, or other cooling devices to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Close curtains or blinds during the day to block out the sun's heat.

Eat light and hydrating foods:
Consume light, refreshing meals that are rich in water content, such as fruits, vegetables, and salads. These foods can help keep you hydrated and provide essential nutrients.

Check on others:
Keep an eye on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, children, or those with chronic health conditions. Ensure they have access to cool environments and are staying hydrated.

Be mindful of pets:
Provide fresh water and a cool, shaded area for your pets. Avoid exercising them during extreme heat and never leave them in a parked car, as temperatures can rise rapidly.

Stay informed:
Stay updated with weather forecasts and heat advisories. Follow any guidelines or recommendations from local authorities regarding heat safety measures.

Remember, it's crucial to take heat and hydration seriously to avoid heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heatstroke. By implementing these tips, you can stay cool and safe during Major Heat Risk Advisory days.
